Elnya bog as a prospective office of vital records for cranes

Specialists from “APB-BirdLife Belarus” Non-Governmental Organisation registered more than 4000 cranes (Grus cinerea) in Elnya bog. Previously, their quantity was considered to be not more than 3000 birds.

Such large-scale recording is carried out for the first time on this bog. It is performed within the project “Let’s Save Elnya Together”. As of today, the population of cranes on this bog is the largest in Belarus. Our attention to cranes was not accidental: this bird has been entered to the Red Book of Belarus; moreover, due to it, the Ramsar Land and Territory Important for Birds status was assigned to Elnya bog, - says Semen Levy, APB’s nature conservation expert, coordinator of the “Territories Important for Bids” program.
